Youngstown Vindicator Op-Ed on Somali Pirate Killed

For the first time since pirates from the war-torn, lawless nation of Somalia began disrupting international shipping off the coast of East Africa five years ago, private security guards have shot and killed one of the criminals.

The action could mark the turning point in the United Nations’ sanctioned military campaign against the pirates, who have taken hundreds of millions of dollars in ransom from shipping companies.

The presence of armed contractors on vessels on trade routes through the Gulf of Aden is important because the warships deployed in the region are not able to adequately patrol that vast area.

In November 2008, the pirates began hijacking ships well outside the Gulf of Aden. That was a month after the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution calling on countries with vessels in the area to use military force to prevent ships from being captured and their crews taken hostage.

Now, private security guards on oil tankers and cargo carriers have the opportunity to add another layer of security.

However, the initial reaction from some quarters to this week’s killing of the pirate is puzzling, to say the least.

Arvinder Sambei, a legal consultant for the U.N.’s anti-piracy program told the Associated Press, “This will be scrutinized very closely. There’s always been concern about these (private security) companies. Who are they responsible to?”

The simple answer is the companies that hire them to fight off attacks. It would be a mistake to think that the pirates are a group of rag-tag criminals. In fact, they use high-speed boats and are armed with assault rifles, RPG rocket-propelled grenade launchers and semi-automatic pistols.

And, they are ruthless. They have no respect for the law and don’t care that their criminal behavior has resulted in an increase in shipping costs and has disrupted the delivery of food aid to African countries that are literally starving due to government corruption and the drought.

It is foolhardy to apply standards to security guards that are providing a valuable service.

In the case of the killing of the pirate, the guards were on board the MV Almezaan, a merchant ship owned by the United Arab Emirates, when a private group approached the vessel twice. During the second approach, there was an exchange of fire between the guards and the pirates.

An European Union Naval Force frigate was dispatched to the scene and launched a helicopter. It located the seven pirates, one of whom had died from small caliber gunshot wounds.

A statement by the Spanish Ministry of Defense said the warship Navarra had intercepted two skiffs and a larger vessel believed to be the mothership. Spanish forces arrested the six pirates and took possession of the dead man.

The forces also sank the larger ship.

Protection

It is clear that the guards were doing exactly what they were hired to do — protect the merchant ship. The idea that the owners or the private security contractor may face legal problems is laughable.

The reality on the high seas is that violent confrontations between ships and pirates are on the rise. Crews are becoming increasingly adept at repelling attacks by pirates in the dangerous waters of the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.

For their part, pirates are becoming more aggressive, shooting bullets and rocket-propelled grenades at ships to try to intimidate captains into stopping.

Piracy on the high seas has gone on too long.

Made the turn.

We have turned and are heading back home. Well back to where I will catch a plane to come home anyhow. looks like I should be home around the 9th. Just in time, hopefully, to head up to Oak Harbor and shoot the Ohio State Indoor Pistol Championship.

This is Funny.

Thanks to Robert Paterniti for forwarding this to me.

A Harley biker is riding by the zoo in Washington , DC when he sees a
little girl leaning into the lion’s cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her
by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter
her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion
square on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl,
and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him
endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event.

The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, ‘Sir, this was the most
gallant and brave thing I’ve seen a man do in my whole life.’

The Harley rider replies, ‘Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was
behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt
right.’

The reporter says, ‘Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a
journalist, you know, and tomorrow’s paper will have this story on the
front page… So, what do you do for a living and what political
affiliation do you have?’

The biker replies, ‘I’m a U.S. Marine and a Republican.’ The journalist
leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed
brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:

U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH

That pretty much sums up the media’s approach to the news these days.

At least the “Good guys” got one. Not us, but the return looks like it may be fun.

Pirate Killed in Failed Hijacking Off Somalia

by beth — published on March 24th, 2010

Today a pirate was killed in a failed hijacking off Somalia. As we all know by now, the Somalian pirates have run rough-shod over cargo ships, cruise ships and any other vessels that have dared to sail the seas off the Somalia coast that they control. Ships that have to navigate those waters have been advised to have security guards on-board in the event of a pirate attack. In this case, that advise paid off. You can see a video report of the story below.

The failed pirate hijacking happened yesterday, March 23, 2010, off the coast of Somalia. The MV Almezaan, a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship, was in route to Mogadishu when it was fired upon by Somalian pirates. The private security team on board the ship returned fire and were able to repel two attempts to hijack the ship. A gun battle ensued during a third attempt to attack the ship and one of the pirate’s was killed.

The European Union (EU) naval force was called for assistance. They boarded three pirate ships that had been involved in the attack on the MV Almezaan and detained six suspected pirates. A seventh pirate was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

Somalian pirates have been a plague on the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somali for years now. Two cargo ships were seized yesterday, making three attacks on cargo vessels in the area in just one day.

The MV Frigia was seized. It is a Turkish-owned and Maltese-flagged cargo vessel that was in transit from Port Said, Egypt to Kaousichang, Thailand. The MV Frigia had 19 Turkish and two Ukrainian crew members on board at the time it was hijacked in the Indian Ocean yesterday.

The MV Talca is a Virgin Island-owned and Bermuda-flagged cargo vessel that was hijacked in the Gulf of Aden yesterday. It was captured about 180 miles south of Mazera off the coast of Oman. The MV Talca was in route from Sokhna, Egypt to Busheir, Iran with 23 crew members from Sri Lanka, one from the Philippines and one from Syria.

The pirate killed in a failed hijacking off Somalia is the first of its kind. Predictably, it has raised controversy as to who has jurisdiction in the waters off the coast of Somalia, whether or not the private security teams are legal, what kinds of individuals would take those jobs and how they are being regulated and overseen.

I have one thought on the controversy. When someone takes the guns away from the lawless Somalians, regulates and sets up oversight of their activities, then we’ll get more concerned about merchant vessels’ efforts to protect themselves. Seriously! (Don’t know who this Beth person is, but I love that statement!)

March 25th, it is here anyhow. LOL

So today I slept all day, well I work the 2300 – 1100 so that’s what I do everyday. Took a day off from running today. Body reminded me that I am 41 and need to take a day off once in awhile. Did get some good sun this afternoon though. In port, so no Pirates here just keeping an eye on dock workers right now. Looking forward to a beer.

March 20th

Another in a God forsaken part of the world. Wouldn’t be bad if there was at least some sunshine. Maybe this afternoon. If not that will be 2 days without getting to layout and work on the tan. I am finding it hard to work under these conditions. LOL  Oh well I suppose I will just have to run longer today than I had planned.

Here comes my Peanut butter and mustard sandwich

And it’s not because of the sandwich. I just made a mistake of a biblical proportion. I read the transcript from the Bret Baier interview with “annointed one” that would be you Dems savior. For those that are still confused I’ll type slower, t-h-e  p-r-e-s-i-d-e-n-t.

How does an interview last that long and yet he never answered a single question. He has got to be the smoothest talking, lying-est, sack of political crap in the history of political crap and buffoonery. He is close to making less sense than Jimmy Carter ever did, and I have a box of rocks that makes more sense than Jimmy Carter.

Now I am compassionate as the next person and I believe that there needs to be some reform in health care, but NOT by taking one tax payer dime to subsidize someone else. Especially illegal aliens. If the bill is so great then why the hell are they buying votes and why is written in that the congress shall be exempt from their own bill. Hello  28th Amendment! If ya don’t know what it is read it. Better yet here it is.

“Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators or Representatives, and Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States .”

Perhaps some of you watched the interview live, but for some reason I think to read it really strikes home a little more at how what a crock this administration really is and this is the biggest power grab that they could come up with. If they really truly cared about the American people perhaps they would stop voting themselves a pay raise and eliminate the federal income tax, start deporting illegal that are draining our economy and a huge cause of the cost of medical care, since we know they never pay for anything and the cost gets transferred to those of us that have insurance and don’t have insurance but do have the moral fortitude know right from wrong and pay our hospital bills, even if it takes time to do so. Or god forbid give businesses an incentive to bring jobs back to the US and stop going after the people in this country that hire people just because they believe in spreading OUR wealth around. Look at the finances of these DC Elite and tell me when they are gonna start spreading a little of their wealth around.

Need to work now, millions of free-loaders are depending on me to get paid and pay my taxes so they can buy a better cell phone than the one I have or maybe push out another kid that they will never take responsibility for.

The day after whatever yesterday was.

Happy St. Patrick’s to any and all who happen to read the ramblings of guy on boat in the middle of the armpit of the world.

Big news today. I tried and must admit I actually enjoyed a Peanut butter and mustard sandwich. Yes I said Peanut butter and mustard sandwich. I have to say it ranks right up there with the ever popular peanut butter and mayo sandwich. Creates an all new taste, not that of what one would think peanut butter and mustard or mayo would create but somethng all together different. Put it on your “to do list” and let me know what ya think.

Day. . . whatever day it is.

Well somewhere off the coast of Oman and nothing exciting to report. Have been able to get some writing done in the Fundamental blog.  Been running on the treadmill everyday. Oh and it’s hot here.  Really, really hot here. Sorry for those of you who are in cold places and wishing for the warm. I found it, and there is plenty of it here.

Day 3

Well I have to admit that this is great, that I have internet access in the middle of the ocean. Not a lot happening here. Please do not ask where exactly I am and what we have on aoboard as the old saying goes “loose lips sink ships” the only sinking we want to go on ot here is the sinking of  little skinny bastards trying yo take our vessel. Well sink until the sharks decide to eat them that is. LOL
